Cephas Paulson was born to solve puzzles that nobody else can solve, a talent the U.S. government has exploited with deadly results. Living in 2202 A.D., his is a world dominated by apathy and hedonism where religion is banned and the few remaining Christians hide in the shadows. Known worldwide as “The Cult Hunter”, Cephas is largely responsible for putting them there. Now living a quiet life as a Religious History professor, Cephas is reluctantly called out of retirement when the government sends him on a high stakes mission designed to crush Christianity once and for all.
As the puzzles begin to unravel, Cephas struggles to find the one answer that has always eluded him, the solution to his own desire to explore faith rather than destroy it. To do so, he finds himself walking a dangerous line between two worlds and two beautiful women. One represents the temptations of the outwardly utopian world of man while the other the Godly world that he’s secretly trying to understand. Unfortunately, neither these worlds nor these women are truly what they appear to be, leaving Cephas to wonder if “The Cult Hunter” has become the hunted. Luckily, like the Apostle Paul, Cephas’ learns that God often chooses His champions from the least likely among us and even “The Cult Hunter” has a place in His plan.

I loved this book. It's the first by this author so I downloaded not knowing what to expect. The story was unique and original. It certainly kept me thinking. The story is about 200 years into the future. Society then is pretty much how we are headed. religion is outlawed. Society will do anything to stay young and beautiful. Drugs are freely given. Everybody looking for fun, entertainment and to be fulfilled. When a cult hunter gets the chance to go back and see Christ crucified to once and for all prove that Jesus was not who he said, he takes it. As he talks about Christ being crucified it was very emotional. As each day passes I see our society becoming more like the society in this book. I expect Christians to start getting really persecuted in this Country. I highly recommend this book.

Puzzle Master eBook TJ McKenna Reviews
As a Christian writer, I love Christian fiction. When I saw this was a time travel piece as well, I was intrigued. Th The book keeps you guessing from the first page to the last. The characters are well developed and the plot moves at good pace. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. This is a winner
Wow. what an exciting adventure to help the reader look at Christian faith from a different perspective. Well written. Intelligent. Very hard to put down.
While this book is not in a genre that I normally read , I decided to give it a chance. I'm so glad I did. It was a fascinating book and was so different from anything else that I have read. While it could be read as a stand-alone book, I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
From a reader's POV the premise of Puzzle Master sounded interesting, but not being familiar with T.J. McKenna's writing I wasn't sure how it would pan out. That needn't have been a concern. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and, other than an involuntary need for sleep, finished it in one sitting. I'm looking forward to the sequel as well!
From a Christian believer's POV, it provides a lot of food for thought. As our society changes and becomes more anti-Christian, what will the future bring? Both in the mores and morals of our society as well as the day-to-day lives of Christians? And what should our collective response be as believers? While Puzzle Master is one artist's conceptual answer to those questions, they are questions that bear pondering.
Thank you, T.J. Both for a riveting read and for food for thought.
Reading Puzzle Master is truly reading a puzzle. Through the eyes of Cephas, a well known atheist who takes down religious cults with the brilliance of Sherlock Holmes and the wonder of a child. I found Cephas an engaging character. Through his eyes, we learn about world with no war, no sickness, no illness, and no life. We find a world searching for meaning. Whatever anyone wants to do is legitimate. I like how Cephas is intrigued by puzzles and how it relates to the puzzle God puts in all of us. I'm so glad book 2 is out. I'm excited to read it.
It' s the year 2022 and all religion has been banned and every sort of vice is condoned. Enter a history professor, Cephas, who not only loves puzzles, but is known as the Cult Hunter...famous for breaking the codes that leads the government to track down "hidden Christians". Now in order to stop them once and for all, Cephas is given the chance to go back in time to prove, once and for all, that Jesus was not the Messiah and did not come back from the dead.
We are quickly heading to the future laid out in this book, and it's quite frightening.
Great book with a great message and should be read by all. Highly recommended!
I have read some great books (including Rysa Walker's The Chronos Files trilogy and Pierce Brown's Red Rising Trilogy) the last year, but Puzzle Master is the one I have enjoyed the most. I appreciate works that make me think, and McKenna's Puzzle Master does not disappoint.
What will the future hold for mankind if we eventually eradicate hunger, disease, and poverty but destroy faith, hope, and love in the process? For what do you strive when every need and desire is filled immediately? What are the consequences of a life without consequences?
This is the future of 2202 in which Puzzle Master is set. The development of sustainable fusion energy generation has finally ended all physical human need, but over time, the atheist onslaught against religion has all but eradicated religion from the world. And Cephas Paulson, cult hunter and Christian code breaker, is celebrated as the hero who wiped out the last significant generation of Christians.
With the presumed end of Christianity, Cephas has “retired” from the cult hunter corps to teach history of religion to the handful of students who find his class entertaining enough to set aside sex and drugs long enough to listen to him over the network.
In the middle of the semester, though, a small group of students join his class in person. One student, Martha McLeod, in particular, catches his attention with insightful questions and observations as her eyes sparkle with life and purpose.
As Cephas gets to know Martha, they discuss their world and how people's values evolved to what they are now. They talk about how little value is placed on life when every need and want are filled--even to the point that suicide as an end to boredom is accepted.
Yet even in Man's new Paradise, a remnant of Christianity still remains and begins to resurface. Cephas is called back to duty as part of a heretofore secret program to send modern observers back in time to the crucifixion to prove conclusively that Christ was a fraud and His resurrection was just a hoax perpetrated by His disciples.
Little do his leaders know that his journey to the crucifixion has become a personal mission with a very different goal. When Cephas meets Christ and beholds Him during the crucifixion and encounters him again after the resurrection, he truly becomes a Christian with a new mission to bring the truth of Christ back to the future.
How will the people of the world respond to his message? More importantly, how will YOU respond to his message?
Note in the interest of full disclosure, I know the author personally--he is a friend. Even so, as I read the book I often marvelled that it was written by someone I know. The rest of the time I was too engrossed in the story and the thoughts it provoked to even consider the author!
