I would have been on here earlier but ... as soon as I heard about the book, I bought it, read it, went back and re-read Free Fall then re-read this book and then read Breaking the Rules. What can I say, it just whetted my appetite. Lately, books by Suzanne Brockmann make me imagine her juggling these virtual plot-lines; there is so much happening! Firstly you've got Hell Week and the SEALs we know and love are instructors and we meet this new crop of tadpoles who (hopefully) will be front and centre in coming books. We get acquainted with "Grunge" who was mentioned in passing many books ago. We get a glimpse of Danny and Jenn and their new baby issues. Then there's Ben and his happenings with Ryan and Wade and THEN there's Wade's Angel sub-plot. There is even a choice of expanded version of TS Inc daycare or shorter version. Personally, I went with the short version, then read the extra scene then read the expanded version at the correct point on the first re-read.

The only thing different about this book is that you get first person thoughts for many of the peep in the book. Suz has always been all about deep point-of-view but this is the first time we are getting first person thoughts, and for so many people, at that. Generally, I hate first person but this time? I loved it. But it's not first person all the way - you get thoughts which then segue into normal third person description of events.

Looking forward to more of the Gull! And welcome back, Suz. I'm sooo happy that you're back in the writing groove.

I really love Izzy; he had to grow on me when he was first introduced, but I so love his character. I’m glad I’m not alone in that, heh.
One of the things I like most is the family dynamics between Izzy, Danny, Eden, Gen, and Ben. I really enjoy seeing them work together as a big family to solve issues. Sometimes they don’t always use the conventional way … but it is something good when it happens.
One of the other things that I like is that she writes about highly arguable issues in a way that don’t make you feel like you are being preached at or whacked over the head with while she stands on a soapbox defending her stance on the matter. I don’t agree with everything she thinks, just a lot of it, but I do enjoy her talent as a writer and I’m a big girl so I can accept that someone is not going to agree with me 100% about everything.
The only gripe I have is that her novellas are so expensive and my library hardly ever, I mean they got just one of them has them. The only reason I was able to grab this one was because it had a big sale, I guess in preparation for next month’s release. I really hope my library is able to get it because it seems like I’ve been waiting for forever for a Brockmann book to come out. I know she has had issues with writer’s block, but I can still get excited about it and I am.
A new bunch of “wanna-be” Navy SEALS have arrived in Coronada determined to survive BUD/S training, aka Hell Week. It doesn’t take long for over half of them to “ring the bell” and leave. But the tadpoles in Boat Squad John (all named John) are determined to survive all that Grunge & Izzy throw at them . . . and that’s a lot! Great introduction to these new guys!

There are ever-changing povs in Ready to Roll as readers are privy to the thoughts of several of the new guys as well as several old favorites. As in other books in the series, there are multiple plot lines ongoing (something this reader loves), an update on past favorite couples, and a good set up for the next book. One of the plot lines in this story features Ben Gillman, Danny & Eden’s 16 year old brother as he experiences “first love or crush” and learns how to handle both a homo-bully and a big disappointment. I enjoyed Ben’s story and the character development he showed. I also loved the role Izzy plays in this one as being inside his head is always a hoot! Dan & Jenn are tested to the limit – charged with surviving their own Hell Week, aka newborn with colic. Several past favorites come riding to the rescue.

As always, Brockmann manages to showcase some of the social issues that she’s passionate about while delivering a good story. A reoccurring theme seems to be one of survival against all odds – both personal and professional. Another great addition to the series! A Must Read!
My cousin (who has never steered me wrong when it comes to book recommendations) suggested this novella to me, and once again, it was an excellent choice. This is the first of Suzanne Brockmann's books that I've read, but even so, I was instantly drawn in to each of these characters, their backstories and personalities. These is a wide, wonderfully colourful range of people, each different in her or his own way, yet all so relatable and, despite half of them being Navy tough guys, freaking adorable (yet still amazingly tough.)

I was especially surprised (and touched) by the dignified way Suzanne Brockmann portrayed the several gay characters, all while making the focus of their individual stories not specifically about them being gay, but rather about their LIVES and their hopes and dreams. When the young adult m/m romance angle is finally revealed, it is equal parts inspiring (thinking of good times to come for those involved) and also sobering and a little heartbreaking to remember that we, as a society, still have a ways to go before same-sex relationships are fully accepted.

Growing up, I'd wished there were more stories about teenage guys like me, at odds with themselves yet desperately wanting/needing a relationship and a chance at love. I can only thank Suzanne Brockmann for writing about these young gay characters with such love and acceptance. Without that, it was still a great, compelling story. But WITH that love and acceptance? It's amazing, heart-warming, and so very needed in this world. Together, the two halves make one awesome whole. <3
